Over 100,00 Filipinos were living in the U.S. in the 1960s, and a majority of these Filipinos resided in California. Filipinos at the time would travel around Southern California looking for work in farming industries, whether it be grapes or lettuce. Over 90% of these Filipinos men without any family.

There were about 4,100,000 Mexican workers in the U.S in 1960, and more than a million of them lived in California. Unlike the Filipinos, Mexican farmers usually stuck with one farm for the entire year. Mexicans also had to support entire families,unlike the Filipinos.
